Four Killed in Halmahera Bus Crash on Serdang Bedagai Toll Road

SERDANG BEDAGAI | INDATANEWS.COM - A deadly traffic accident struck the Jasa Marga Kualanamu Toll (JMKT) Road at Kilometer 63.2 in Sei Sejenggi Village, Perbaungan District, Serdang Bedagai Regency, North Sumatra, on Monday morning, May 11, 2026. Four passengers were killed and nine others injured after a Halmahera bus overturned following a collision on the toll road.

The bus, bearing license plate BK 7347 UA, suffered severe damage after losing control and overturning during the crash.

Chicken Transport Vehicle Triggered Chain Collision

Head of the Serdang Bedagai Traffic Police, AKP Gokma W. Silitonga, stated that 14 people, including the driver, were inside the bus at the time of the incident.

According to preliminary police findings, the accident began when a chicken transport pickup truck with license plate BK 8053 EG, traveling from Tebing Tinggi toward Medan, allegedly lost control.

The vehicle reportedly struck the road barrier before overturning and blocking part of the toll lane.

Moments later, the Halmahera bus approached from behind. Investigators believe the driver was unable to avoid the overturned vehicle in time, resulting in a violent collision.

"The bus driver suddenly saw the chicken transport vehicle in front of him, panicked, and swerved to the left. The bus then hit the toll barrier and veered off the roadway," AKP Gokma explained on Monday afternoon.

Four Dead, Nine Injured

Police confirmed that four people — one woman and three men — died in the accident. Nine other passengers sustained injuries and were rushed to nearby hospitals for medical treatment.

Emergency responders and police officers arrived shortly after receiving reports of the crash to evacuate victims and secure the accident scene.

"All survivors and victims who died in the accident were immediately evacuated to nearby hospitals," AKP Gokma said.

Authorities are still working to identify several victims and collect additional data regarding the casualties.

Police Continue Investigation

The Serdang Bedagai Traffic Police have launched a full investigation into the cause of the fatal accident.

Officers are currently examining the crash site, questioning witnesses, and gathering evidence to determine the exact sequence of events.

The accident caused temporary disruption along the JMKT Toll Road as evacuation and cleanup operations were carried out. (IDNC)
