MEDAN | INDATANEWS.COM - The North Sumatra Provincial Education Office is accelerating the implementation of several strategic regional education programs to ensure that all initiatives targeted for 2026 can be completed on schedule. The programs include the renovation of 187 classrooms, the construction of SMA Unggulan Sukma Nias, and the construction of 120 new classrooms at various educational institutions.
The Secretary of the North Sumatra Provincial Education Office, Terang Dewi Susanti Ujung, provided an update on the progress of the programs during a press briefing. The briefing was held on Wednesday, September 16, 2026, by the North Sumatra Provincial Communication and Informatics Office at the North Sumatra Dekranasda Pavilion at the North Sumatra Governor's Office in Medan.According to Terang, the regional government is continuously monitoring the progress of work in the field to ensure that the programs are implemented according to the established schedule. Accelerating the work is a particular focus, as several construction projects are targeted for completion later this year.
Among the programs currently being accelerated is the renovation of 187 classrooms, which has been divided into a total of 70 work packages. A total budget of Rp31,390,668,601 has been allocated for the program. The average physical progress of the classroom renovation work currently stands at around 70 percent."We will complete the renovation work as quickly as possible," Terang said during the press briefing.
The classroom renovation program is one of the measures being undertaken by the North Sumatra Education Office to improve school infrastructure. The regional government has set a target of completing the renovation of all 187 classrooms by September 2026.
With average physical progress now reaching 70 percent, the North Sumatra Education Office continues to urge contractors to complete each stage of construction according to the planned schedule. The completion of the renovation work is also expected to support teaching and learning activities by providing more suitable classrooms for students and teachers.In addition to renovating existing classrooms, the regional government is also carrying out the construction of 120 new classrooms. A total budget of Rp41,494,275,000 has been allocated for this program. It is part of the North Sumatra provincial government's efforts to increase the availability of learning spaces at educational institutions.
The construction of the new classrooms is also part of efforts to strengthen education infrastructure in North Sumatra. Additional learning spaces are expected to help schools better meet their infrastructure needs amid growing demand for educational services.
Another strategic program receiving particular attention from the North Sumatra Education Office is the construction of SMA Unggulan Sukma Nias. A budget of Rp88,448,819,000 has been allocated for the construction of the school.
According to Terang, the physical progress of the construction of SMA Unggulan Sukma Nias has currently reached 61 percent. The North Sumatra Education Office is targeting completion of the school by December 2026."Completion is targeted for December 2026. Classes are scheduled to begin in 2027," Terang said.
The target is part of the regional government's plans to strengthen secondary education services in the Nias Islands. Once construction is completed, classes at the school are scheduled to begin in 2027.The accelerated construction of SMA Unggulan Sukma Nias also reflects the regional government's attention to the development of education infrastructure in island regions. The construction of new educational facilities is intended to support school operations through adequate infrastructure.
The North Sumatra Education Office continues to monitor construction progress to ensure that each stage of the work is carried out according to plan. Timely completion is also one of the key aspects in the implementation of these strategic programs.
In addition to programs that are still under implementation, the North Sumatra Education Office has also reported the completion of several strategic education initiatives. These include the provision of electricity and internet services for all public SMA, SMK, and SLB schools in North Sumatra.
In terms of electricity supply, the Education Office has installed power networks at seven educational institutions. A total budget of Rp4,417,700,000 was allocated for the program.To improve digital connectivity in schools, the Education Office also provided satellite internet services, including Starlink, to 163 educational institutions. A total budget of Rp3,260,000,000 was allocated for the initiative.
Ensuring reliable electricity and internet connectivity is an important part of supporting educational activities, particularly amid the growing use of digital technology in classrooms. A reliable electricity supply is also a fundamental requirement for various school activities to be carried out effectively.Terang emphasized that the regional government has now met the electricity and internet service needs of all public schools covered by the program.
"This means that in 2026, electricity and internet services are 100 percent available at all schools in North Sumatra," Terang said.With these achievements, the North Sumatra Education Office is focusing not only on expanding physical school facilities but also on providing supporting education infrastructure. Classrooms, electricity supplies, and internet access are interconnected elements in supporting educational activities.
Throughout 2026, several strategic programs of the North Sumatra provincial government through the Education Office will continue to be accelerated. The ongoing initiatives include classroom renovations, the construction of new classrooms, and the construction of SMA Unggulan Sukma Nias. Meanwhile, the provision of electricity and internet services to public schools has already reached the 100 percent target.The regional government aims to complete the remaining work according to schedule so that schools, students, teachers, and the wider community can benefit from the programs as soon as possible.
