DELI SERDANG | INDATANEWS.COM - Around 240 student and club swimmers from across Deli Serdang Regency took part in the "Gebyar Kemerdekaan" swimming competition held to commemorate the 81st anniversary of the Independence of the Republic of Indonesia. The sporting event was held on Saturday, August 8, 2026, at the Deli Serdang Regency Government swimming pool in Lubuk Pakam.
Deli Serdang Deputy Regent Lom Lom Suwondo, SS, officially opened the event organized by the Deli Serdang branch of the Federasi Akuatik Indonesia (FAI), Indonesia's swimming and aquatic sports federation. Also present at the opening was Asniar Lom Lom Suwondo, Staff Advisor I of the Deli Serdang TP PKK.The swimming competition brought together students from various levels of education as well as athletes from swimming clubs across Deli Serdang Regency. The participation of athletes from different age groups made the event not only part of the Independence Day celebrations but also a platform for identifying and nurturing young swimming talent from an early age.
Lom Lom Suwondo praised FAI Deli Serdang for organizing the competition. In his view, sporting events of this kind play an important role in shaping the character of young people while also helping develop the athletic abilities of competitors."We thank the Federasi Akuatik Indonesia of Deli Serdang Regency for organizing such a lively and festive event. Activities like this are very important to develop young athletes while strengthening sportsmanship and love for the homeland," Lom Lom said.
Lom Lom expressed hope that the competition would produce talented swimmers capable of bringing recognition to Deli Serdang at various championships in the future, both at the regional level and in competitions at higher levels.
He also urged the judges to carry out their duties objectively throughout the competition. In his view, all the athletes had gone through a demanding training process, and the judging should therefore reflect their actual abilities and performances during the competition."I appeal to the entire judging panel to maintain objectivity in evaluating the athletes. Those who have trained hard every day should be recognized according to their performances," he said.
Lom Lom added that the Deli Serdang Regency Government would continue its commitment to sports development through various programs and events. The regional administration also supports the organization of different activities that provide young people with opportunities to develop their talents and abilities.One form of this support is the EVORIA program, short for "Event Olahraga, Seni Budaya, dan Keagamaan," covering sports, arts and culture, as well as religious activities. The program is one of the regional government's initiatives to provide the public, particularly young people, with opportunities to participate in positive activities.
"We hope events like these will produce highly committed athletes who can enhance the reputation and dignity of Deli Serdang Regency. At the same time, they should help foster fighting spirit, sportsmanship and a sense of community among the younger generation," he added.
FAI Deli Serdang Chairman M Rinaldi Miraza said the "Gebyar Kemerdekaan" swimming competition was the aquatic organization's first such event. According to the organizing committee, around 240 participants from various educational institutions and swimming clubs took part in the competition.
The participants came from elementary schools, secondary schools and swimming clubs throughout Deli Serdang Regency. All 11 swimming clubs currently active in Deli Serdang participated in the competition.According to Rinaldi, the participation of all swimming clubs was a sign of the strong interest in developing swimming in Deli Serdang. At the same time, the competition gave athletes an opportunity to test their abilities under competitive conditions after undergoing regular training.
The organizing committee also provided an electric bicycle as a prize for the overall champion. The overall winner was determined based on the highest number of medals won during the competition.The prize was donated by the Regent of Deli Serdang and the Chairman of the FAI Deli Serdang Board of Trustees. The initiative was intended to support the development of swimming while providing an additional incentive for athletes to continue improving their performances.
Rinaldi also expressed his appreciation to the parents of the athletes, who have consistently supported their children. He said the role of parents was extremely important because athlete development does not take place only during competitions but also through regular training, which requires strong family support.
Rinaldi hopes parents will continue accompanying their children during training and at various competitions. Such support, he said, is an important foundation for young athletes to maintain their motivation and continue developing their abilities.
"May the parents of the athletes always remain healthy so that they can continue accompanying their sons and daughters during training and supporting them on their journey toward sporting success," he said.Beyond the sporting competition, "Gebyar Kemerdekaan" also provided an opportunity to strengthen ties among athletes, coaches, parents, clubs and sports officials. Interaction among the various stakeholders is expected to contribute to the creation of a better and more sustainable environment for developing young athletes.
