DELI SERDANG | INDATANEWS.COM - The Deli Serdang Regency Government is planning to build 501 new classrooms in 2027 to address shortages of learning spaces at several schools. The development is also expected to help eliminate afternoon school shifts at schools that continue to face limited classroom capacity.
Deli Serdang Regent dr. H. Asri Ludin Tambunan announced the target on Wednesday, September 16, 2026, during a meeting with the Deli Serdang Education Council. The meeting discussed various issues in the education sector identified by the council through monitoring and evaluations conducted at several educational institutions across the regency's districts.
In addition to the need for new classrooms, the meeting provided an opportunity for the Education Council to present various findings and recommendations concerning the management of education in Deli Serdang. The issues discussed ranged from the administration of school committees and the availability of supporting educational facilities to efforts to improve the qualifications and competencies of teaching staff.
The Deli Serdang Education Council also recognized several school principals for implementing innovative approaches in managing their respective educational institutions. The recognition was part of the monitoring and evaluation findings aimed at providing a more comprehensive overview of the state of education at the district level.
Chairman of the Deli Serdang Education Council Harun Lubis presented the results of the monitoring and evaluation of educational institutions to the regent. A key issue discussed during the meeting was the shortage of classrooms.
The limited number of classrooms is among the reasons the Deli Serdang Government is preparing to build 501 new classrooms in 2027. The additional facilities are expected to increase school capacity and provide students with better learning environments.
The Deli Serdang Government is also linking the construction of the new classrooms to its goal of eliminating afternoon classes and the shift system at affected schools. With additional classrooms, schools are expected to be able to organize lessons more effectively without relying on rotating schedules because of insufficient classroom capacity.
The plan to build new classrooms highlights the importance the regional government places on educational infrastructure as part of efforts to improve access to education. However, the Education Council's monitoring findings also show that comprehensive improvements in the education sector cannot be achieved through infrastructure development alone.
Asri Ludin called for all findings and recommendations presented by the Education Council to be followed up promptly. He also highlighted the administration and organization of school committees, which were among the issues examined during the education evaluation.
"I appreciate the findings and recommendations that have been presented. Of course, they will be followed up," he said.
The statement underscored the regional government's intention to use the Education Council's monitoring and evaluation findings as a basis for further measures. The restructuring and improvement of school committees will also receive attention to ensure that education administration at the individual school level functions more effectively.
In addition to the shortage of classrooms, the Deli Serdang Education Council called for efforts to strengthen teachers' abilities and competencies. Based on the discussions held during the meeting, improving education quality must go hand in hand with the development of infrastructure and facilities.
The Education Council also proposed greater use of corporate social responsibility (CSR) programs to support the education sector. Such support could help improve facilities and meet the needs of educational institutions according to their respective requirements.
Another issue concerned the provision of teachers for guidance and counseling, known as the Bimbingan dan Konseling (BK) service, at the elementary school level. The need was raised to strengthen support for students within the school environment.
The Deli Serdang Regent said he would review the need for BK teachers. At the same time, he emphasized the importance of strengthening teaching competencies, which is also considered an important component in improving the quality of education in the region.
According to Asri Ludin, improving education quality requires more than simply providing infrastructure and facilities. The quality and competence of teachers and school principals also play an important role in the organization and implementation of the educational process.
"I agree that teachers need to continue developing their competencies. They cannot remain at the level of knowledge they already have, especially in today's technological era," he said.
Asri Ludin emphasized the importance of teachers continuously adapting to developments in science and technology. Rapid technological changes require teachers to regularly update their knowledge and skills to meet the evolving demands of education.
Strengthening teaching competencies is also closely connected to the quality of instruction in schools. For this reason, the regional government is not only preparing to build new classrooms but is also focusing on the human resources that directly support the educational process.
The results of the monitoring and evaluation conducted by the Deli Serdang Education Council show that improvements in the education sector need to address several aspects simultaneously. Classroom availability, school committee administration, supporting facilities, teacher competencies, and the provision of BK teachers were among the issues discussed at the meeting.
The Education Council also recognized school principals who have introduced innovative approaches to school management. The recognition is expected to encourage school leaders to develop further approaches to improving the quality of educational services.
At the same time, the regional government needs to follow up on the various findings from the monitoring and evaluation. The Deli Serdang Regent called for the Education Council's recommendations to be used as a basis for improvements, including in the organization and management of school committees.
The construction of 501 new classrooms in 2027 is one of the measures being prepared by the Deli Serdang Government to address the shortage of learning spaces. The project is also intended to support the elimination of afternoon classes and shift-based learning at affected schools.
The education quality improvement agenda discussed at the meeting, however, extends beyond the development of school infrastructure. Strengthening the competencies of teachers and school principals, meeting the need for BK teachers, improving school committee administration, and optimizing CSR support are also among the areas receiving attention from the regional government.
The meeting between the Deli Serdang Regent and the Education Council therefore did not focus solely on schools' infrastructure needs. The discussions also covered the strengthening of human resources and improvements in education administration to ensure that the quality of education can be developed comprehensively.
Also attending the meeting were Deli Serdang Education Office Head Fitriyan Syukri Parinduri, Regional Personnel Agency Head Yusuf, and members of the Deli Serdang Education Council. The participation of the relevant officials was part of the regional government's coordination efforts to follow up on various issues and recommendations concerning education in Deli Serdang Regency.
