BATAM | INDATANEWS.COM - Barelang Police have uncovered a motorcycle theft network allegedly operating in several areas of Batam City. As part of the investigation, officers from the Barelang Criminal Investigation Unit, Nongsa Police and Sungai Beduk Police seized a total of 40 motorcycles believed to have been stolen from various locations.
Barelang Police presented the results of the investigation at a press conference on Monday, September 22, 2026, in the lobby of Barelang Police Headquarters. Barelang Police Chief Kombes Pol Anggoro Wicaksono personally led the press conference. He was accompanied by Barelang Criminal Investigation Unit Chief Kompol Agung Tri Poerbowo, Nongsa Police Chief AKP Eko Chandra, and Sungai Beduk Police Chief Iptu Ady Satrio Gustian.Barelang Police Chief Kombes Pol Anggoro Wicaksono commended the work of the Criminal Investigation Unit and the officers involved. He said the large number of recovered motorcycles was an important part of the investigation into motorcycle theft in Batam.
"Regarding the disclosure of motorcycle theft crimes in Batam City, as the Barelang Police Chief, I highly appreciate this investigation because a considerable amount of evidence has been secured. There are 40 motorcycles that have been secured, originating from several crime scenes. In the Nongsa Police jurisdiction, there is one police report; Sungai Beduk Police, five police reports; Batu Aji Police, nine police reports; Bengkong Police, four police reports; Batu Ampar Police, one police report; while the remaining 20 motorcycles are still undergoing identification," said Kombes Anggoro.Of the 40 motorcycles secured, several have already been identified based on reports filed at several police stations. Police recorded one case in the jurisdiction of Nongsa Police, five cases in Sungai Beduk, nine cases in Batu Aji, four cases in Bengkong and one case in Batu Ampar.
The remaining 20 motorcycles are still undergoing identification and ownership verification. Residents who have had their motorcycles stolen can directly check the recovered vehicles with the police.Barelang Criminal Investigation Unit Chief Kompol Agung Tri Poerbowo subsequently explained the course of the investigation that led to the arrests of the suspects. Officers initially followed up on reports of vehicle theft in Bengkong and Batu Aji. During the investigation, they obtained information that led them to several suspected perpetrators.
The officers subsequently questioned the two men. During the interrogation, investigators obtained information about the alleged main perpetrators, identified by the initials RH, 28, and RN, 29, also known as Kipeng.
A day later, the Nongsa Police Investigation Unit arrested RH and RN. During the operation, officers also seized a T-shaped key and four modified key tips allegedly used to break motorcycle ignition locks.The investigation did not end with the arrests of the four men. Investigators expanded the case to uncover the structure of the network and trace the movement of the stolen motorcycles. Their investigation led to a total of 40 motorcycles, some of which have already been identified, while ownership of the others is still being verified.
Based on the investigation so far, the suspects allegedly divided the tasks among themselves. One suspect allegedly used a T-shaped key to damage the motorcycle's ignition lock, while another monitored the surrounding area and secured the situation.After the thefts, the suspects allegedly hid the motorcycles before replacing their license plates with counterfeit plates. The vehicles were then handed over to individuals acting as buyers or intermediaries, who allegedly offered the motorcycles for resale.
Through this method, the network was allegedly able to operate in several locations. Police are continuing to examine the motorcycles that have not yet been identified while also investigating whether additional individuals were involved in the network.Four suspects have been detained in the case: RH, 28; RN, 29, also known as Kipeng; VE, 27; and RA, 26. The victims or complainants are identified by the initials YB, 33, and MSH, 24.
Investigators are applying Article 477 paragraph (1) letters f and g in conjunction with Article 591 letter a of Law Number 1 of 2023 concerning the Indonesian Criminal Code. If convicted, the suspects face a maximum prison sentence of seven years.
Barelang Police Chief Anggoro Wicaksono also urged residents whose motorcycles had been stolen to immediately contact Barelang Police or one of its affiliated police stations. They are advised to bring relevant documents and verify the recovered motorcycles based on their physical characteristics.
"For members of the public who believe they have lost a motorcycle but did not have the opportunity to file a police report at the time, please come to us. We will immediately check the physical condition so that the motorcycle can later be loaned for use. For vehicles that already have identified owners and whose investigation process is still ongoing, we will also facilitate the vehicles being loaned to the complainants in accordance with the applicable regulations," the Barelang Police Chief stressed.Residents whose vehicles were recovered were also present at the press conference. One victim's representative expressed his gratitude after police found his motorcycle. He also praised the police for their swift action in solving the case.
"Personally, I would like to thank Sungai Beduk Police and Barelang Police for uncovering this case. Thank God, I urge the public not to hesitate to report to the police because it does not cost a single cent," he said.Barelang Police said they would continue taking firm action against motorcycle theft in Batam City. In addition to law enforcement, police urged the public to remain alert and take precautions to prevent vehicle theft.
Residents are encouraged to use additional security devices on their motorcycles, choose secure parking areas and avoid leaving their vehicles unattended. Police also urged the public to immediately report crimes or information about suspicious activities through the 110 police emergency line or at the nearest police station.The recovery of the 40 motorcycles also gives residents who previously lost their vehicles an opportunity to determine whether their motorcycles are among the recovered evidence. Police will verify the vehicles based on their condition and ownership documents before processing them further in accordance with applicable laws and regulations. (IDNC)
