MEDAN | INDATANEWS.COM - A total of 5,654 athletes from across North Sumatra have registered for the 12th North Sumatra Provincial Sports Week, or Porprovsu XII 2026. The number could still increase, as the organizing committee has opened a second registration phase for the sporting event, which will feature competitions in 28 sports.
The Chairman of the Indonesian National Sports Committee (KONI) of North Sumatra, Hatunggal Siregar, said the thousands of athletes will compete at Porprovsu XII, which will be held from November 7 to 15, 2026. He provided an update on the number of participants during a press conference held by the North Sumatra Communication and Informatics Office (Diskominfo) on Thursday, August 27, 2026, in the lobby of the Dekranasda building at the North Sumatra Governor's Office."As of today, 5,654 athletes have registered for Porprovsu XII, which we will hold from November 7 to 15, 2026," Hatunggal Siregar said.
KONI North Sumatra is continuing to intensify preparations for Porprovsu XII. These preparations include planning the arrival schedules of athletes and preparing the venues where the competitions will be held.
Hatunggal said his organization had drawn up comprehensive plans to ensure that the competitions could be held as scheduled. At the same time, he acknowledged that conditions on the ground could require adjustments or lead to unforeseen circumstances. The organizing committee is therefore working to anticipate possible changes as early as possible."We have prepared the plans, although some things may unexpectedly change due to conditions on the ground. However, we are trying to minimize any changes as much as possible," Hatunggal said.
Of the 28 sports included in the Porprovsu XII program, 386 events will be contested. A total of 2,683 medals will be up for grabs for athletes representing various regencies and cities across North Sumatra.In terms of funding, KONI North Sumatra is still awaiting the amendment to the regional budget (P-APBD). KONI North Sumatra and KONI organizations in the regencies and cities will apply a joint funding model for the athletes.
"For the event budget, we are still waiting for the P-APBD. However, the model will involve cooperation: 50 percent of the athletes' budget will come from KONI organizations in the regencies and cities, while 50 percent will come from KONI North Sumatra. Meanwhile, 100 percent of the organizing committee's costs will be covered by KONI North Sumatra," Hatunggal explained.
In addition to technical preparations for the competitions, KONI North Sumatra is also stepping up its information campaign for Porprovsu XII. According to Hatunggal, the campaign is being conducted through various sporting competitions as well as direct visits to individual regions.
These efforts are intended to provide athletes from the regions with greater opportunities to compete at the provincial-level sporting event. KONI North Sumatra is also implementing the directive of North Sumatra Governor Bobby Nasution, which calls for all sporting talents in the regions to be given an opportunity to demonstrate their abilities at Porprovsu XII."In accordance with the governor's directive, we are continuing the information campaign. This includes appointing the 16 chairpersons of KONI organizations in the regencies and cities so that they can participate in Porprovsu. In addition, we have also visited KONI organizations in the Nias Islands and brought them together in Gunungsitoli," he said.
The direct outreach efforts have also contributed to an increase in the number of registered athletes from the Nias Islands. Hatunggal said several regencies and cities in the region had recorded higher participation compared with Porprovsu 2022.In Gunungsitoli, for example, only 33 athletes participated in Porprovsu 2022. For Porprovsu XII 2026, 50 athletes have now registered. The number could still increase, as the second registration phase remains open.
"After we went directly to the area, another 17 athletes joined. Since the second registration phase is still ongoing, it is possible that the number will continue to increase," Hatunggal said.Nias Regency has also recorded a significant increase. At Porprovsu 2022, the region sent only nine athletes. For Porprovsu XII 2026, however, 43 athletes have already registered.
In North Nias, the number of participants has also risen from 21 to 24 athletes. West Nias recorded an increase from six to 50 athletes. South Nias has seen an even more significant development: after not participating in the previous Porprovsu, the region now has 31 registered athletes.
Overall, athlete participation from the Nias Islands has increased significantly. Hatunggal said that only 69 athletes from the region participated in Porprovsu 2022. By comparison, 198 athletes have now registered for Porprovsu XII.
"In the past, only 69 athletes in total participated from the Nias Islands. Now, based on the registrations so far, there are already 198 athletes. We will continue to intensify this information campaign because Porprovsu is a strategically important event for identifying talented athletes in North Sumatra and mapping their potential," he said.According to Hatunggal, the increase in the number of participants from the Nias Islands demonstrates that direct outreach efforts in the regions have had an impact on athlete participation. KONI North Sumatra will continue encouraging other regions to make optimal use of their athletes' potential and enable them to participate in Porprovsu XII.
Beyond serving as a competition platform, Porprovsu is also an important component of sports development in North Sumatra. Through competitions between regions, KONI can monitor the development of athletes' abilities while identifying talents who can be further developed for higher levels of competition.Meanwhile, the North Sumatra Provincial Youth and Sports Office (Dispora) said it would continue supporting various sporting competitions organized by KONI North Sumatra.
The Head of Dispora North Sumatra, M. Mahfullah Pratama Daulay, said the support could be further optimized once Dispora North Sumatra completes its institutional transformation into a Regional Public Service Agency (BLUD)."We will continue to support competitions organized by KONI North Sumatra. Once Dispora has been transformed into a BLUD, we can become more financially independent and organize various events without continuing to depend on the regional budget (APBD)," Mahfullah said.
With the possibility that the number of participants will increase during the second registration phase, Porprovsu XII 2026 is expected to become one of the key events for mapping the sporting strength of regencies and cities across North Sumatra. In 28 sports featuring 386 events, athletes will have the opportunity to demonstrate their abilities while paving the way toward participation at higher levels of competition.Porprovsu XII will be held over nine days, from November 7 to 15, 2026. KONI North Sumatra is continuing to work on technical preparations, coordination with KONI organizations in the regencies and cities, and venue readiness to ensure that the entire event runs smoothly.
