GRIB Jaya and Labuhanbatu Selatan Journalists Vie for Regent’s Cup

With every move putting concentration and decision-making skills to the test, participants will compete in the "Catur Gembira" tournament organized by the DPC GRIB Jaya of Labuhanbatu Selatan for the Labuhanbatu Selatan Regent's Cup.

The tournament will be held on Saturday, August 15, 2026, at Kafe Biuty in Kotapinang as part of the celebrations marking the 81st anniversary of the Independence of the Republic of Indonesia. Registration is free, with total prize money of Rp5 million up for grabs.

A Strategic Battle on the Chessboard

Chairman of the DPC GRIB Jaya Labuhanbatu Selatan, Abdullah M.N. Situmorang, said the competition was deliberately designed to take place in a cheerful and friendly atmosphere. At the same time, participants will have ample opportunity to demonstrate their chess skills.

"As part of the celebrations marking the 81st anniversary of the Independence of the Republic of Indonesia, we are holding a fun chess tournament involving NGO activists and journalists, who will compete for the Labuhanbatu Selatan Regent's Cup," Abdullah told journalists on Tuesday, August 11, 2026.

Chess is more than simply moving pieces across a board. On the 64-square board, every move carries consequences. A single mistake can expose a weakness in a defense, while a precise move can turn a seemingly hopeless position into an opportunity for victory.

Participants therefore need a high level of concentration, patience, the ability to read their opponent's game and the courage to determine the right moment to launch an attack. The tournament format also requires players to develop their strategies from the outset, as the matches will be contested under a knockout system.

This format makes every match crucial. Players have little room for error because a defeat immediately ends their path to the next round.

From the opening game, chess players must maintain their concentration, identify their opponent's playing style and carefully formulate their strategy. Beyond the competition on the chessboard, the DPC GRIB Jaya Labuhanbatu Selatan has a broader objective. The tournament is intended to provide a platform for GRIB Jaya, NGO activists and journalists to meet and exchange ideas in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere.

"Through this event, we hope to bring GRIB Jaya, particularly in Labuhanbatu Selatan Regency, closer to various elements of society while strengthening our bonds of friendship," Abdullah said.

According to the organizers, the event is not solely about sporting results. A spirit of togetherness is also an important part of the activities commemorating the 81st anniversary of the Independence of the Republic of Indonesia.

The Secretary of DPC GRIB Jaya Labuhanbatu Selatan and a member of the organizing committee for the "Catur Gembira" tournament, Bung Asep Munandar, confirmed that participation is broadly open to the targeted groups.

There is no limit on the number of participants. Registration will remain open until Saturday morning, August 15, 2026, the day the tournament is held.

"The number of participants in this tournament is unlimited. Registration will remain open until the morning of August 15, 2026," Bung Asep Munandar said.

With registration offered free of charge, the organizers hope that as many NGO activists and journalists from Labuhanbatu Selatan as possible will take part. Those who make it through to the final round will have the opportunity to take home the Labuhanbatu Selatan Regent's Cup while also receiving a share of the total Rp5 million prize pool.

Independence Day Celebrations Continue

For the DPC GRIB Jaya Labuhanbatu Selatan, the "Catur Gembira" tournament is more than a sporting event that tests intellectual ability.
