Journalists Criticize Alleged Reporting Restrictions at South Labuhanbatu Prosecutor’s Office

The chairman of IKWAL, H. Mirwan Hasibuan, expressed regret over the alleged restrictions faced by media representatives. As an experienced journalist, he emphasized that law enforcement agencies and the press should build their relationship through openness, communication and cooperation.

IKWAL Calls for Greater Transparency in Information

H. Mirwan Hasibuan emphasized that journalists play an important role in delivering information to the public. In his view, law enforcement agencies should therefore provide an effective communication channel for media professionals, particularly when journalists are carrying out their duties at official institutional events.

"It is very regrettable that several Prosecutor's Office employees allegedly prohibited media representatives from carrying out their reporting duties. The Prosecutor's Office should always work with the media because the press plays an important role in social oversight and in providing information to the public," H. Mirwan Hasibuan said.

According to Mirwan, the incident was not merely about taking photographs or reporting on an event. Rather, the situation concerns the broader issue of public information transparency within a law enforcement institution.

Journalists attending an institutional event do not come merely with cameras and recording equipment. They carry a professional responsibility to gather information, verify it and subsequently make it accessible to the public through journalistic reports.

Events held by government institutions and law enforcement agencies generally have a public dimension that the community should be informed about. At the same time, journalistic activities must be carried out in accordance with applicable laws, venue regulations, security requirements and journalistic ethics.

Against this backdrop, Mirwan hopes that the South Labuhanbatu Prosecutor's Office will improve its communication with all journalists so that a similar incident does not occur again.

"We hope that the South Labuhanbatu Prosecutor's Office will be more open toward all journalists so that such an incident does not happen again," he stressed.

Press Freedom and the Public Interest

The press holds an important position in democratic life. Indonesia's Law No. 40 of 1999 on the Press guarantees press freedom while also establishing the functions of the press as a medium for information, education, entertainment and social oversight.

At the same time, the exercise of press freedom carries an obligation to respect legal provisions, journalistic ethics and certain interests that receive special protection under applicable laws and regulations.

At official events held by government institutions or law enforcement agencies, restrictions on journalistic activities may be necessary for certain reasons and on the basis of relevant regulations. However, transparent explanations to journalists are important to avoid differing perceptions regarding their work.

Open communication can also prevent misunderstandings between law enforcement agencies and media professionals. If specific rules determine which areas may or may not be photographed or covered journalistically, event organizers can clearly communicate those provisions to journalists present at the venue.

South Labuhanbatu Prosecutor's Office Yet to Issue Statement
