STRENGTHENING INFLATION CONTROL MEASURES: The North Sumatra Provincial Government is strengthening various inflation-control measures through affordable food campaigns, supply security and market interventions to maintain food price stability across North Sumatra.

MEDAN | INDATANEWS.COM - North Sumatra recorded annual inflation of 2.71 percent in September 2026, measured year on year (yoy). The figure placed the province fourth among regions with the lowest inflation rates nationwide.

On a monthly basis, measured month to month (mtm), North Sumatra recorded inflation of 0.14 percent in September 2026.

The Head of the Economic Bureau of the North Sumatra Provincial Government, Evan Botung Daulay, presented the development during a press briefing organized by the North Sumatra Provincial Communication and Informatics Agency on Tuesday, October 6, 2026. The event was held at the North Sumatra Dekranasda Pavilion at the government complex on Jalan Diponegoro in Medan.

"According to BPS data, North Sumatra ranks fourth nationwide with the lowest inflation rate," Evan said.

According to Evan, North Sumatra has maintained this position over the past two months. The North Sumatra Provincial Government continues to strengthen various inflation-control measures, particularly policies directly aimed at ensuring the availability and affordability of food for the public.

Affordable Food Helps Contain Inflation

Evan explained that affordable food campaigns are among the strategies adopted by the North Sumatra Provincial Government to maintain price stability while containing inflationary pressure. The program is being implemented alongside various other measures aimed at ensuring the availability of essential goods and keeping prices affordable for the public.

The North Sumatra Economic Bureau is also developing various policy measures in cooperation with numerous stakeholders. The government is not focusing solely on consumer-level prices but is also ensuring that supply chains operate properly so that food supplies remain available to the public.

The measures include securing supplies, ensuring that the needs of low-income communities are met, and monitoring the legally stipulated maximum retail prices (HET) for certain staple food commodities.

"This is in line with the governor's directive to maintain price stability," he said.

According to Evan, inflation control requires a collective effort because changes in food prices can be influenced by various factors, ranging from supply availability to distribution. For that reason, the government continues to coordinate with various stakeholders so that rapid intervention can be carried out whenever signs of price increases emerge.

Economic Growth Through Collaboration

In addition to maintaining price stability, the North Sumatra Provincial Government is also focusing on promoting regional economic growth. Evan said economic growth in North Sumatra currently stands at around five percent.

At the same time, the central government has set a target of increasing national economic growth to eight percent by 2029. To support this target, the North Sumatra Provincial Government is pursuing a similar policy approach by strengthening cooperation with various stakeholders in implementing economic programs.

Evan emphasized that the regional government cannot promote economic growth on its own. Cooperation among the government, businesses, economic actors and various other stakeholders is an essential component of sustainable economic policy.

"The steps are the same as I mentioned earlier. We always implement our economic policies in cooperation with other stakeholders," he said.

The collaboration is also intended to ensure that economic policies do not remain at the planning stage but produce concrete benefits for the public. The government monitors the implementation of various programs while also evaluating the effectiveness of interventions that have already been carried out.

Regional Agencies and Enterprises Ready to Intervene

Evan explained that the North Sumatra Provincial Government regularly conducts monitoring and evaluations to ensure that various intervention measures are properly implemented. The government relies on coordination among regional government agencies and regional enterprises to anticipate potential market price fluctuations at an early stage.

Through this mechanism, various government agencies and regional enterprises are prepared to intervene whenever signs of supply shortages or rising prices of essential food commodities emerge. At the same time, the government ensures that food distribution continues to operate properly to prevent shortages in the market.

In addition to securing supplies, the government can organize affordable food markets or sales campaigns for staple commodities when market conditions indicate the possibility of a significant price increase. These measures are among the instruments used to protect public purchasing power while containing inflationary pressure.

Evan explained that the government is seeking to prevent reports of potential shortages from developing into actual disruptions to food supplies. Regional enterprises operating in the food sector are therefore also involved so they can take supply-security measures when necessary.

"We are working to maintain supplies in the market so that there are no more shortages. When there are early indications of a possible shortage, we generally also have regional enterprises operating in the food sector that can intervene by ensuring supplies," Evan said.

With annual inflation at 2.71 percent and monthly inflation at 0.14 percent in September 2026, the North Sumatra Provincial Government is maintaining its strategy of stabilizing prices. The focus remains on securing supplies, affordable food markets, price monitoring and cross-sector coordination.

This development also provides a foundation for the regional government to maintain North Sumatra's economic stability amid efforts to achieve stronger economic growth. Inflation control and efforts to strengthen economic growth are expected to move hand in hand so that increasing economic activity continues to be accompanied by stable public purchasing power.
