MEDAN | INDATANEWS.COM - The Deli Serdang Regency Government is opening investment and cooperation opportunities with the People's Republic of China to support regional economic development, with agriculture and the use of modern technology among the areas being explored.
Deli Serdang Regent dr H Asri Ludin Tambunan conveyed the initiative during a meeting with the Acting Consul General of the People's Republic of China in Medan, Song Jianming, on Tuesday, September 22, 2026, at the Consulate General of the People's Republic of China in Medan.The meeting followed a visit by a delegation of investors from Qingyuan City in Guangdong Province to Deli Serdang several days earlier. The Deli Serdang Regency Government views the visit as part of its efforts to expand communication and explore potential cooperation with partners from China.
Asri Ludin said the Deli Serdang Regency Government is generally open to investment from China, provided that the cooperation brings tangible benefits to the region and its people. The regional government is also ready to discuss various investment opportunities in line with the regency's potential and development needs."We are open to investment from China. Regardless of the sector, we welcome opportunities for cooperation as long as they benefit the region and the people," the Regent said.
During the meeting, the two sides also discussed opportunities to develop the agricultural sector through the use of technology. The Deli Serdang Regency Government sees modern agricultural technology as an opportunity to increase productivity while strengthening the development of the regional agricultural sector.
Such cooperation could include the exchange of knowledge, technology and experience in agricultural sector management. The Deli Serdang Regency Government also hopes that relations with regions in China will provide access to innovations suited to the specific conditions and needs of local agriculture.In addition to new investment opportunities, Asri Ludin also discussed the continuation of cooperation with Shanwei City, which had already existed during the administration of Regent Amri Tambunan. In his view, the relationship between the two regions could provide an avenue for expanding communication as well as the exchange of knowledge and technology.
The regional cooperation, he added, should not focus solely on investment. Relations between the regions could also provide both sides with opportunities to learn from one another and exchange experiences in developing potential sectors, including agriculture, technology and other areas with shared development opportunities.The Deli Serdang Regency Government also views such cooperation as part of its efforts to introduce the region's potential to international partners. Through continuous communication, cooperation opportunities can be more effectively aligned with development priorities and the specific characteristics of each region.
"We will help connect Deli Serdang with regions in China that have particular strengths in agriculture. Agricultural technology can be one of the areas of cooperation that we promote," Song Jianming said.
Song explained that several regions in China have developed highly productive agricultural systems, particularly in rice production. According to him, some regions have achieved productivity of around 15 tons per hectare.These experiences could become part of a knowledge exchange with Deli Serdang. In addition to increasing the productivity of food crops, the development of agricultural technology in China also includes the utilization of brackish-water areas.
This potential creates further opportunities to discuss technologies that can be adapted to local soil conditions and the agricultural needs of Deli Serdang. The exchange of experience could also help both sides identify technologies that can be effectively applied in the region.Song added that the Consulate General of the People's Republic of China does not view Shanwei City as the only potential partner for regional cooperation. The consulate will also look for other regions and cities in China and connect Deli Serdang with partners whose potential and needs are more closely aligned.
Song also considers Deli Serdang's strategic location a supporting factor in expanding international cooperation. The presence of Kualanamu International Airport could, in his view, strengthen connectivity and facilitate the movement of people as well as joint activities between the regions.
"So it is not only about Shanwei. The consulate will also select regions that are suitable for Deli Serdang so that Deli Serdang can continue to develop. Hopefully, mutual visits can take place so that both sides can directly learn about the potential that exists," he said.The planned reciprocal visits are considered important for strengthening communication while allowing both sides to gain a direct understanding of the potential of each region. Face-to-face meetings could also help both parties establish more concrete forms of cooperation that meet their respective needs.
For the Deli Serdang Regency Government, cooperation with regions in China is part of its efforts to expand development and investment networks.
