MEDAN | INDATANEWS.COM - Medan City Council member Rommy Van Boy has called on residents to work together in combating the growing drug trafficking problem in residential neighborhoods. He delivered the message during a public outreach program on Medan City Regulation No. 10 of 2021 concerning Public Order and Public Peace, held on Sunday, July 5, 2026, in the Medan Sunggal and Medan Selayang districts.
The first session took place at the Pinang Baris Permai Housing Complex on Jalan TB Simatupang, Sunggal Village, Medan Sunggal District. The outreach program then continued on Jalan Nusa Indah, Asam Kumbang Village, Medan Selayang District.
Rommy said that the spread of drug trafficking remains the issue most frequently raised by residents. He therefore urged all sectors of society to begin preventive efforts within their own families.
"Ladies and gentlemen, let us stand together against drug trafficking. The first and most important step begins within our own families," Rommy said.
The Chairman of the Pemuda Pancasila Youth Organization for Medan Polonia Subdistrict stressed that tackling drug trafficking should not be viewed solely as the responsibility of law enforcement agencies. According to him, local communities play a crucial role in monitoring their neighborhoods, including supervising the activities of children and teenagers to prevent them from becoming involved in drug abuse or criminal activities.
"If our children are still outside the house or neighborhood at 9:00 p.m., we should immediately contact them and ask them to come home. Simple actions like these can go a long way in protecting our children from drugs, motorcycle gangs, and other negative influences," he said.
Rommy also highlighted alleged drug trafficking activities along Jalan TB Simatupang, Gang Sepakat, in Sunggal Village. He emphasized that the issue can only be effectively addressed through close cooperation between the government, law enforcement authorities, and local residents.
"The most important factor is public support. Without cooperation from the community, it will be much more difficult for security authorities to effectively combat drug trafficking," he emphasized.
In addition to concerns over drug trafficking, residents voiced complaints regarding damaged roads, inadequate drainage systems, malfunctioning street lighting, social assistance programs, and access to healthcare services. Rommy announced that the Sahabat Rommy Van Boy Team would be deployed to document all public concerns and forward them to the relevant government agencies.
"As a first step, I will assign the Sahabat Rommy Van Boy Team to document every affected location and every concern raised by residents so that solutions can be pursued as quickly as possible," Rommy said.
He also assured residents that his team would provide round-the-clock assistance to help the public access healthcare services under the Universal Health Coverage (UHC) program.
Sunggal Village Head Siti Arnisah also urged residents to immediately report any locations suspected of being used for drug trafficking to the village administration or law enforcement authorities.
"During an inspection at a location suspected of being used for drug trafficking, I was even hit with a thrown water bottle. Without public support, efforts to eradicate drug trafficking will be extremely difficult to succeed," she said.
Meanwhile, Asam Kumbang Village Head Reyza F. Lubis emphasized that strong collaboration among government institutions, security authorities, and the community remains the key to sustainably reducing drug trafficking in residential areas. (IDNC)
